Eagles drop pair of season opening matches

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's tennis team launched their season with a pair of matches at Augustana College on Saturday. The Eagles claimed one match in each dual, but fell to both Wabash College and the host Vikings by identical scores of 8-1.

In the season opening match, Wabash College (1-1) swept doubles play, although Edgewood College (0-2) nearly won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, falling 8-6. In singles play, Patrick Lagman picked up the Eagles' first win of the season defeating Nate Koepler 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3 singles.

Edgewood College earned their first doubles win of the season in second dual of the day, as Lagman and Austin Papenthein scored an 8-4 victory over Augustana College's Andy Wall and Kevin Bayles. The Eagles didn't win a singles match, but both Lagman and Brian Davenport pushed their opponents to a 10-point match tiebreaker.

The Eagles will continue their opening weekend on Sunday in Waverly, Iowa. Edgewood College will face Wartburg College at 9:00 a.m. and finish the day against Central College at noon.
