MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team was shooting 50 percent and appeared to be heading into halftime with a lead against MSOE on Tuesday night at the Edgedome. Then suddenly the Eagles shooting touch disappeared and the Raiders got rolling. The end result was an 88-72 victory for MSOE, their second straight win in the Edgedome in as many seasons.
After battling through seven lead changes in the first half, Sammy Gander inside on an assist from Zoey Dougherty to put Edgewood College (2-6, 2-3 NACC) ahead 24-23. Sierra Jiran would hit a three-point basket two possession later and the Eagles were on a 10-3 run for a 32-26 lead with 3:05 left before halftime. However, Edgewood College missed their final three shots of the half while the Raiders converted four baskets to steal a 34-32 halftime lead.
Holly Denfeld of MSOE (4-1, 3-1 NACC) scored on the first play of the second half, but the Eagles' Mariah Hill answered with two free throws and Ellen Hayden followed with a basket to tie the game at 36-36. However, Hayden's hoop would be the last Eagle bucket in an extended dry spell. Edgewood College would make just two of their next 15 field goal attempts and fall behind 55-42 over a span of a little more than 10 minutes.
The Eagles started to find the hoop again, but the MSOE trio of Megan Kroll, Shaylan Reardon and Denfeld kept widening the margin, leading by as many as 17 points at 73-56 with 2:49 left to play. Edgewood College was forced to foul to try and extend the game, but the Raiders made 16 of 21 free throw attempts in the final three minutes to send the Eagles to their third NACC loss of the season.
Jiran had a memorable night, recording her first ever double-double with a career-highs in both points (14) and rebounds (14). Hill led the Eagles with 18 points, including three three-point baskets, and a team0high six assists. Rachel Pope scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Edgewood College made 12 of their first 24 shots, but finished the game at 39.4 percent from the field.
MSOE had matching scoring leaders with Denfeld and Kroll each scoring 26 points. Reardon almost gave the Raiders three players with 20 or more, but she finished with 19 points. Kroll had eight rebounds, while Marly Trier recorded five assists and four steals. The Raiders shot 51.9 percent in the second half and 47.5 percent for the game.
Edgewood College will regroup for their final game before winter break on Saturday. The Eagles will travel to Aurora University for a 2:00 game with the Spartans.
