Jiran, Spangler dominate Chargers in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, P.R. – Sierra Jiran and Courtney Spangler provided the inside muscle and the Eagles defense kept Colby-Sawyer College off the free throw line as the Eagles downed the Chargers 63-44 in their final game at the San Juan Shootout. Edgewood College limited Colby-Sawyer to just 15 points in the second half for their first non-conference win of the season.

Edgewood College (4-8) trailed by one in the early going before Marissa Hoyer sparked an 8-0 Eagle run with a bucket in the paint. Jiran, Jazmin Little and Hannah Menzia also scored to complete those four straight baskets. The Eagles pushed their lead out to 33-24 with two minutes remaining in the first half on a three-point play by Spangler, before settling for a 37-29 halftime lead.

Colby-Sawyer (5-4) closed to within 44-40 in the first seven minutes of the second half, thanks to four points from Kristin Ellis, but the Chargers wouldn't get any closer. Jiran scored four straight points and added another basket later in an 11-0 Eagles run that put the Chargers at arm's length. Edgewood College would hold the Chargers to just four points on two field goals in the final 13 minutes of the game.

Jiran scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting and added eight rebounds. Spangler notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Menzia chipped in nine points and eight rebounds. The Eagles shot just 33.3 percent from the field, but made up for it by hammering the glass for 19 offensive rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer was led by Jessica Shenkel who tallied 11 points, while Lexi Iannone scored eight points. The Chargers got to the free throw line just three times in the game, and missed all three attempts.

Edgewood College will fly home from Puerto Rico on Wednesday and begin preparing to jump back into NACC action. The Eagles will travel to Milwaukee for a rematch with Alverno College on Saturday, January 3. Edgewood College defeated Alverno 59-44 back on November 20 at the Edgedome.
