Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles erase early deficit in win over Wesley

SAN JUAN, P.R. - Edgewood College began Monday afternoon's game at the San Juan Shootout much like yesterday's contest against Ramapo College but were able to keep the pressure steady in the second half and come away with their first non-conference win of the season. Edgewood College was down eight with about eight and a half minutes remaining in the first half but went on a run and led by 10 at the half. The Eagles eventually won 73-65 and Dylan Rusch led the Eagles with 17 points.

Wesley College's Jordan Johnson converted on a layup to put the Wolverines up 22-14 with 8:33 left in the first half but it would be all Eagles from there on out in the opening half. Trevon Ampe's three-point play kickstarted what would eventually become a 25-7 Eagles run to close the half. Emilio Lopez and Matt Savatski hit clutch triples during the run and the Eagles took advantage of eight Wolverine turnovers in the half and took a 39-29 lead with them into the locker room.

The Eagles nearly lost their lead early in the second half as Wesley College jumped out of the gates with eight-straight points to pull within two. The Eagles settled down again and stretched their lead back to nine at the 14:34 mark, but the Wolverine's showed off their resilience yet again and pulled within just one point four minutes later after a Dontae Jones layup. The Eagles and Woverines would trade baskets over the next six minutes until a 6-0 run from Edgewood College gave the Eagles another 10-point lead with just 4:08 left. Wayne Lennon and the rest of the Wolverines would pull within five points on two more occasions over the final 2:17, but Edgewood College hit 8-of-10 free throws over that stretch to seal the victory.

Rusch totaled 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and went 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. Tal Diekvoss was the only other Eagles player in double figures (10) but four other Eagles had at least eight points in Trevor Neale (9), Matt Savatski (9), Trevon Ampe (9) and Derek Braucht (8). Savatski also pulled down eight boards in the win. Lennon led the Wolverines with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting and hit three three-pointers.

Edgewood College will return to action on Monday, Jan. 5 against Marian University at the Edgedome. The game is set for a 7 pm start.
