MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team got the kind of quality opponent they expected in fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh. The Titans defense smothered the Eagles in the first half on their way to a 62-40 victory at the Edgedome. Rachel Pope led Edgewood College with 15 points, all but one of which came in the second half.
UW-Oshkosh (5-0) limited the Eagles opportunities with 10 blocked shots in the first half as the Titans raced ahead to a 16-6 lead. Edgewood College (1-3) switched to a zone which slowed down UWO's offensive production, but the Eagles couldn't generate much offense themselves. Edgewood College shot just 14.8 percent in the first half and trailed 30-11 at the break.
The second half went much better for the Eagles, as Pope began to assert herself. The junior from Dodgeville scored 12 consecutive Edgewood College points over a five-minute stretch in the second half which cut the Eagles deficit down to 20 points at 51-31. The Eagles nearly played the Titans even in the second half only being outscored 32-29 and shooting 35.7 percent.
Pope secured team-high scoring honors with 15 points on 6-for-14 shooting. She went 6-for-8 from the field in the second half. Courtney Spangler scored eight of the Eagles 11 points in the first half and finished with 12 for the night. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Mariah Hill had a team-high three assists. The Eagles shot 78.6 percent (11-for-14) at the free throw line.
UW-Oshkosh received 15 points off the bench from Eliza Campbell, and 10 points and seven rebounds from Alex Richard. Katelyn Kuehl scored nine points, while Taylor Schmidt had five assists. The Titans shot 38.3 percent from the field.
