Box Score MADISON, Wis. – It's hard to remember the Edgewood College men's soccer team who started the season scoreless and 0-2, albeit against a pair of quality opponents. That squad has given way to this Eagles team who Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field extended their unbeaten streak to six straight games with a 2-1 NACC victory over Marian University.
Stephen Gilbert and
Andrew Aurit netted first half goals in the win.
Edgewood College (5-2-1, 2-0 NACC) barely waited for the opening whistle to fade away before striking on goal. Following an Eagles' corner kick in the third minute, Marian failed to get the ball safely out of harm's way. Jake Owen crossed the ball to the right to Alexander Ribeiro. Ribiero played the ball back in to the head of Gilbert who scored his third goal in the last two games, beating Marian University (3-3-1, 0-2 NACC) goalkeeper Bryce Woldt.
A few minutes later Ribeiro almost tallied his own, ringing a 20-yard free kick hard off the crossbar. The Eagles did get their second of the night in the 19th minute. A cross from the left found Aurit in the penalty area. Aurit faked a shot, pulled the ball back to his left to shake his defender, and fired a low shot past Woldt for his second goal of the season.
In the second half, the match became more physical as Marian became more aggressive on the offensive end of the field, attempting to close the margin. In the 81st minute, the Sabres' Michael Ekstrom played a long ball toward the top of the Eagles' penalty area. Eagle goalkeeper Chad Stivers, who had replaced starter Matt Dammen at halftime came out to meet the ball, but Marian's David Reinke reached the ball first. He touched it with his head to the right and scored the ball into the vacated net. Marian managed three more shots in the waning four minutes of the game, but Stivers saved one and the other two didn't find the mark.
The Eagles' six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1) is the Eagles longest streak since a seven-match winning streak (7-0) in the 2005 season. The school record is an 11-match unbeaten streak (10-0-1) in the 1999 season.
Edgewood College will be on the road for a 6:00 p.m. match on Saturday at Benedictine. Benedictine is coming off a 1-0 victory over Dominican which snapped the Stars' 104-match winning streak against conference opponents.
