Eagles can't hold on, settle for tie with SNC

Thini Messan
Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – A fourth straight win for the Edgewood College men's soccer team was as close as clean bull ride in a rodeo. Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't hold the reins quite long enough and St. Norbert College managed a tying goal with eight seconds left in regulation time. Neither team found an equalizer in the extra 20 minutes, and the match ended in a 1-1 double overtime draw.

After a scoreless first half, Edgewood College (3-2-1) drew first blood at Schneider Stadium. Sam Quinones sent a centering pass that found Thini Messan in the box. Messan lifted a shot into upper corner to beat St. Norbert College (1-3-2) goalkeeper Scott Faul, and give Edgewood College a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. It was the first goal of the season and the third of his career for Messan.

The Eagles seemed poised to hang on for the victory even as the Green Knights pushed more and more men forward late in the match. However, in the waning seconds, Trevor Scales crossed to Kirill Vasilenko who ripped a side volley past Eagle goalkeeper Matt Dammen. Vasilenko's goal tied the match at 1-1 with just eight seconds remaining and all but guaranteed overtime. The Eagles outshot St. Norbert College 6-3 in the extra sessions, but neither team tallied the game-winner.

Match statistics were relatively balanced with St. Norbert outshooting Edgewood College 20-15, but both teams placing seven shots each on goal. Dammen made six saves for the Eagles, including one in overtime.

Edgewood College will return home for a Parents' Day date with Concordia University Chicago. The Eagles and Cougars will get underway at 11:00 a.m. at Breese Stevens Field. The game can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
