Morgan sets singles record in win over Regents

Tim Morgan

MADISON, Wis. – Chilly temperatures forced the Edgewood College men's tennis team indoors, but after picking up an early win, the Eagles ran into one of the conference's hottest teams. Edgewood College downed Rockford College 9-0 at Cherokee Country Club behind senior Tim Morgan's record setting performance, but was just edged by Aurora 5-4 at Hitters SportsPlex Saturday evening.

In the morning match, the Eagles dominated Rockford sweeping through doubles while only losing two games. In singles play, the Regents' No. 1 singles player Mladen Ubiparipovic put up the biggest fight, but Patrick Lagman took care of him 6-4, 6-2.

With his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, Morgan passed Mike Connors (1994-97) for the most singles wins in Edgewood College history at 23 victories. This is the second milestone for Morgan as he also holds the Eagle record for most career doubles wins.

After taking a break during the day, Edgewood College headed to Middleton where they greeted Aurora, who had won four straight matches coming into Saturday. Although all three doubles matches were close, the Eagles took a 2-1 advantage into singles play after the No. 1 and No. 2 teams took care of business. Lagman was the first to finish in singles play and after cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 victory, Edgewood College looked in control. Morgan also won his No. 3 match 6-1, 6-4 and with three matches to play, the Eagles held a 4-2 advantage.

Michael Wanta at No. 4 and Michael Janusek battled down to the wire and both pushed their opponents to a third set, but ultimately fell and Edgewood College found themselves all tied up with Aurora. Eric Gavinski was the last man standing for the Eagles and after an exhilarating first set which went into a tiebreaker, Edgewood College's No. 2 fell 7-6 (7-0), 6-4.

Edgewood College will head to Whitewater for a non-conference bout against UW-Whitewater on Monday. Conference play will resume on Wednesday as the Eagles face Lakeland College and Marian University.
