Eagles hang on to 2-1 victory over WLC

Andrew Aurit
Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Although a normal men's college soccer game lasts 90 minutes, Edgewood College and Wisconsin Lutheran College found a way to pack most of the action in just 10 minutes. The Eagles were outshot 15-8, but Edgewood College found the net twice and held on to a 2-1 victory.

Edgewood College (8-4-2, 4-2-1 NACC) applied steady pressure in the first half and controlled the tempo on the slick Warrior Field. Both the Eagles and the Warriors attempted four shots apiece before the break, but none were on the frame. Edgewood College held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks, but did not turn the set pieces into opportunities to score.

Not long after the second half whistle blew Edgewood College took the lead. Evan Rogaczewski slipped a pass to Andrew Aurit who took off down the near sideline. Aurit and a defender were neck and neck to the goal line when the senior flicked a perfect touch in front of the mouth of the goal. Stephen Gilbert was there to head it in for his fourth goal of the season, putting Edgewood College up 1-0. Before Wisconsin Lutheran (5-6-3, 2-3-1 NACC) could settle down, the Eagles added another score. At the 53:34 mark, Rogaczewski dribbled up the near sideline and centered a ball to Aurit who slid it past the goalkeepers right side for the 2-0 lead.

Something clicked in the Warriors after that goal because Wisconsin Lutheran controlled the pace the rest of the way. In the 62nd minute, Wisconsin Lutheran's Austin Drake sent one of five corner kicks to the middle of the box where Nate Wasser cut the Eagles' lead in half. The Warriors fired 11 shots compared to Edgewood College's four in the second half, but Matt Dammen snagged four saves while the others were not on goal.

With the victory, Edgewood College jumped to third in the NACC. The Eagles will battle Maranatha Baptist on Monday before returning to conference action against MSOE on October 23. Links for live video are available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
