FOND DU LAC, Wis. – For the first time in 11 years, the Edgewood College men's tennis team won a dual match. Edgewood College, who added men's tennis this season after it was cut in 2000, topped Ripon College 5-4. The Eagles then fell to Carthage College 8-1 in the nightcap.
The day got off to a good start when the Eagles (1-4) took two of three doubles matches from Ripon College (0-1). At No. 2 doubles,
Cody Strebig and
Max Divelbiss beat Jackson Vogel and Alex Tande 8-5. Since the Redhawks only had five players, the Eagles won at No. 3 doubles by default.
Divelbiss also won at No. 3 singles, topping Vogel in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 5 singles,
Clint Reed earned his first win of the year, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 over Jeffery Mehlert. The Eagles got another default win at No.6 singles to take the dual match 5-4, earning their first win since 2000.
The nightcap did not go as well, as Carthage College (4-0) took the dual match 8-1. At No. 1 doubles, John D'Orazio and
Tim Morgan fell to the 25th ranked team in the region, Daneric Hazelman and Jeff Lotz 8-3. The Redmen took the other two doubles matches 8-2 and 8-1.
In singles, Divelbiss earned the Eagles only win of the dual match, but he had to win a super tiebreaker to take the victory. He took the first set over Nick Boomgarden 6-1 before Boomgarden came back to take set two 6-4. Divelbiss then won the super tiebreak 10-7, earning his second win of the season.
The Eagles will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to take on UW-Oshkosh. The dual match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
