MADISON, Wis. – For the sixth time this season, the Edgewood College men's soccer team dropped one goal decision. Marian University scored an early goal played solid defense the rest of the way to take the contest 1-0. The loss ended Edgewood College's six-match winning streak over the Sabres.
The Sabres (4-5, 2-1 NAC) came out and put pressure on the Eagles early as Kevin Mawhinney pushed a header wide in the fifth minute before Mario Pinto put Marian on the board later in the minute. Pinto took a pass from teammate Jose Hernandez and ripped a shot into the net for his team-leading third goal of the season.
Edgewood College (2-7, 1-3 NAC) had a few opportunities in the first half.
Andrew Aurit had two chances in the same minute. His first shot in the 32nd minute went high and his second shot came only 47 seconds later and was saved by Nathan Thiery, the Sabres' keeper. In the 36th minute
Andy Witek had his shot blocked and Marian went into halftime up 1-0.
Marian opened the second frame just like they did in the first, with pressure. Hernandez ripped a shot that got past Eagle keeper
Kyle Koenig, but it hit the post to keep the score at 1-0.
The Eagles had a chance to tie the game in the 84th minute when
Paul Domann ripped a shot that was saved by Thiery as the Sabres held on to take the game 1-0.
In the contest, the Eagles fired 12 shots to the Sabres 17.
Greg Dezell led the Eagles with three shots, one on target. Aurit and Witek took two shots apiece with each putting one on net. Koenig made three saves for the Eagles and Thiery stopped five shots for Marian.
Edgewood College will have the challenge of facing Dominican University, who is ranked seventh in the nation, on Saturday in River Forest, Illinois. Dominican will provide live stats and live video for the contest that starts at 1:00 p.m.
