MADISON, Wis. – In a game of runs the winning team is usually the team the goes a run late and has momentum down the stretch. However, that was not the case on Wednesday night as the Edgewood College men's soccer team came back from a two-goal halftime deficit, but could not get over the hump as Ripon College tallied the last goal and took the game from the Eagles 3-2.

With the score tied at two and under 10 minutes remaining, Ripon (1-0) was putting pressure on the Eagles and put themselves in a position to take the lead. The Red Hawks then got a fortuitous bounce as Edgewood College scored an own goal that gave Ripon a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes to play. The Eagles could not come back to tie the score as they dropped their season opener.

Ripon got on the board in the 17th minute as Kevin Cerderholm ripped a free kick from the top of the box that was saved, but Joe Drexler was there to tap in the rebound and give the Red Hawks the advantage. Cederholm then tallied a goal 13 minutes later as he took a shot from the of the box that bounced off of two Eagle defenders and snuck into the lower right side of the net and the Red Hawks led 2-0.

Ripon put pressure on the Eagles in the first 14 minutes of the second half, as they had two corner kicks and took three shots, two of which were saved by Edgewood College's goalkeeper Kyle Koenig. Nate Hedrington gave the Eagles a spark in the 61st minute as he netted his first goal as Eagle. He ripped a shot from the right side of the box across to the left side of the net that cut the Eagle deficit to 2-1.

Only four minutes later, Greg Dezell tallied the equalizer as he took a pass from Brad Swenson and took a shot from the left side of the box that crossed over the right side of the net to knot the score a two apiece.

Then with less than five minutes to go, the Red Hawks tallied and own goal as they took the game 3-2.

The game was played very even as Ripon took eight shots to the Eagles seven and both teams had two corner kicks apiece. Each team made three saves and Edgewood College committed 12 fouls and the Red Hawks committed 11.

Edgewood College will have a few days off before they play at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
