MADISON, Wis. – For the second consecutive game, the Edgewood College men's soccer jumped out early, but their opponent came back to send the game to overtime. Lakeland College tied the game in the final minute and used that momentum in the extra session to take the game and escape Breese Stevens Field with a 2-1 victory.
Edgewood College (5-9, 3-5 NAC) jumped out early when Sunday's hero,
Paul Domann netted his third goal of the season. In just the fifth minute, Domann picked up a free kick in front of the net, got a foot on it and rifled a shot into the right side of the net to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage.
The Muskies (3-7-4, 3-1-4 NAC) came right back down the field and had a chance to tie the game just three minutes later. Ben Koepell ripped shot towards the top of the net that was just out of the reach of the Eagles' goalkeeper,
Kyle Koenig. However, the shot was just high enough that it hit the crossbar and the Eagles held on to their one goal lead.
From that point on, play was even with neither team having many chances until the final minute. After Lakeland's Jeremy Hardy had his shot blocked in the 89th minute, the Muskies received two corner kicks in 24 seconds. The first one ricocheted off the post before being kicked out by the Eagles awarding another corner. Koepsell took the next corner and placed it on Hardy's head who directed it into the net to tie the contest with just 55 seconds left, sending the game to overtime.
In the overtime session, the Muskies put pressure on the Eagles, firing two shots in just over a minute's time. The first shot came in the 97th minute and was shot wide and the next shot ended the game. Koepsell collected a ball on the left side and rocketed a shot that bounced of Koenig's hands and trickled into the right corner of the net giving the Muskies the 2-1 victory.
Lakeland outshot the Eagles 14-8 in the contest and earned more corners, 9-1. For the Eagles, Koenig made three saves and
Greg Dezell took a team-high four shots.
The Eagles will have a chance to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Milwaukee to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
