ELMHURST, Ill. - Elmhurst College scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining, to snap the Edgewood College men's soccer team's winning streak at four games with a 2-1 non-conference decision. The Eagles rallied to tie the game late in the second half before the Blue Jays scored the go-ahead goal.
Although Elmhurst College (5-2-1) outshot the Eagles for the game 19-9, the Eagles put more shots on the frame in the first half. Edgewood College's Jerrid Dokey forced Blue Jay goalkeeper Sebastian Domczewski into making two first half saves, and Greg Dezell put another shot on target. The Blue Jays got off nine shots, but only put one on the net in the first 45 minutes. For the game each team had five shots on goal.
Brian McMahon finally broke through for the Blue Jays in the 54th minute, scoring off a pass from Matt Sterner. The Eagles began to apply serious pressure in the 74th minute as Andriy Apetrey and Tyler Duellman combined for three shots in short succession.
Those two Eagles would team up to provide the equalizer in the 76th minute, as Apetrey collected a ball off an Edgewood College (4-2-2) corner kick and fed it to Duellman who scored from the far corner of the penalty area. For Duellman, a senior defender, it was the fifth goal of his career.
Elmhurst would earn three corner kicks in the final 15 minutes, but finally scored off a free kick. Jake Pahr netted the game-winner off an assist from Jon Brehm with 2:34 remaining.
Edgewood College will return to the Land of Lincoln on Saturday to face Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Conference match. Game time will be 1:00 p.m. from River Forest.
