MADISON, Wis. - A year ago, the Edgewood College men's soccer team had difficulty building momentum as they never put together a winning streak of three games or longer. It's already a different story this season, as the Eagles extended their winning streak to three games with a 2-0 victory over Benedictine University on Parents' Day at Breese Stevens Field.
Andriy Apetrey scored his third goal in two games and Greg Dezell added an insurance goal to help Edgewood College goalkeeper Shane Sullivan earn his first shutout of the season. Edgewood College (3-1-2, 2-0 NAC) held a 9-1 advantage in shots in the first half, but still had to settle for a scoreless draw through 45 minutes. The best first half opportunity for Edgewood College came in the 26th minute. Woody Burns fired a 20-yard blast that Benedictine goalkeeper Jim Hanley stopped but didn't contain. Tyler Duellman poked at the loose ball twice, but the first was knocked down by a defender and Hanley knocked away the second effort.
It wasn't until the 69th minute that Edgewood College finally broke through. Brandon Jerstad chased down a lead pass into the right corner and slipped a defender long enough to deliver a cross. Apetrey timed his run well and one-touched the ball to the far post, to record the eventual game-winning goal, his second in as many games.
Five minutes later, the Eagles would tally an insurance goal. Hanley knocked away an Edgewood College cross, but the ball ended up on the chest of Jerrid Dokey. Dokey controlled the ball directly to Dezell who had plenty of time to find the back of net for his second goal of the season. Dokey's assist gave him a point in each of his last three games and he currently leads the team with 11 (4 goals, 3 assists).
Sullivan wasn't challenged often, but recorded one save in each half to earn the shutout. Saturday's game marked the seventh shutout of his career.
Edgewood College will return to Breese Stevens Field tomorrow for a 3:00 match with Lawrence University. For those who can't make it to the Eagles-Vikings game, the match will be broadcast live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com/livevideo.
