MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College got the first goal from a pair of substitutes and nursed that lead for nearly 60 minutes, but UW-Superior finally broke through. The Yellowjackets tied the game with three minutes to play and neither team scored through two overtimes, eventually settling for a 1-1 season opening draw.
Woody Burns and Matt Pampuch entered the game in the 23rd minute and wasted little time in making an impact. Four minutes after subbing in, Pampuch gathered in a loose ball near the top of the penalty arc and slid a short pass to a streaking Burns who finished the play in stride to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute of the game.
Edgewood College (0-0-1) and goalkeeper Shane Sullivan protected the lead well for most of the rest of the game, until one of UW-Superior's own substitutes scored on a goal similar to Burns's tally in the first half. Bryan McBride, took a short through pass from Thomas Shuldeisz and scored the equalizer with three minutes remaining in regulation. UW-Superior managed the only shot on goal in the 20 minutes of extra time that followed.
For Burns, a junior, it was his second career goal. Sullivan made two saves, including one in overtime to preserve the tie. The Yellowjackets (0-0-1) held the upper hand in shots, 16-10, and the two teams combined for 44 fouls and six yellow cards.
Edgewood College will be back on the pitch this Saturday when they meet Midwest Conference rival Ripon College on the Red Hawks home field.
