MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Edgewood College men's soccer has made a habit of producing more goals with fewer shots, but Wednesday night at Uihlein Soccer Park, the tables were turned on the Eagles. The Eagles had eight shots on goal compared to just three for MSOE, but it was the Raiders who prevailed 2-1 in a showdown between two teams who entered unbeaten in Northern Athletics Conference play.
The Raiders (8-2-1, 5-0 NAC), who beat the Eagles for the first time in 10 seasons a year ago, got on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute. Mike Vanek scored his second goal of the season, this one unassisted, on MSOE's first shot on goal of the game.
Edgewood College (7-3-2, 4-1 NAC) answered quickly. Anthony Colletti crossed to Greg Dezell for a header in front of the Raider net. MSOE goalkeeper Alex Mejac turned away Dezell's attempt, but senior Andriy Apetrey was in the right spot to put the rebound in the back of the net. For Apetrey, it was his team leading seventh goal of the season, his third straight game with a goal and extended his point streak to eight consecutive matches. It was also Colletti's second assist in as many games.
The score remained tied through halftime and deep into the second half. The Eagles kept the pressure on, ultimately earning 13 corner kicks and holding MSOE without one of their own. Finally, in the 79th minute MSOE was able to get a second goal past Edgewood College goalkeeper Shane Sullivan. Brandon Crozier scored his fourth goal of the season, off an assist by Vanek, for the game-winner.
Sullivan finished with one save for Edgewood College, while Mejac was kept busy making seven saves for MSOE.
Edgewood College, who is ranked eighth in the Central Region this week, will return home for another NAC match with Rockford College on Saturday. The Eagles and Regents can be seen live on the web at www.edgewoodcollegeeagles.com/livevideo. Free registration is required to view the game.
