Box Score

MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College surmounted an early Maryville goal to score three unanswered on their way to a 3-1 win in a very physical game at Breese Stevens Field on Sunday.

The Eagles (1-1) notched win No. 1 of the 2008 season after prevailing over Maryville University (Mo.) despite sweltering temperatures that reached the low 90's. In the ninth minute, Cory Scott gave the Saints (1-1) an early lead after finding a deflection that put the Eagle defense out of position.

Minutes before halftime, the Eagles and Andy Witek would have their revenge as they evened the score off a deflection of their own. Less than seven minutes into the second half, Mike Bourgeois delivered a beautiful cross following a corner kick to give Woody Burns a perfect 10-yard strike to give the Eagles their first lead of the match.

Five minutes later, Greg Dezell added the insurance goal as he weaved between a few defenders and neatly placed the ball over the outstretched hand of the Saints' keeper.

Edgewood College's defense did an admirable job of limiting Maryville to just nine shots in the game, opposed to 16 for the Eagles. A total of 25 fouls were called, 17 of them called on the home team. Shane Sullivan made two saves in his second start of the season and helped the Eagles push their record even on the year.

The Eagles' next match will be against Ripon College on September 5, at 8 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field.
