Eagles let see-saw battle slip away

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. – After a back-and-forth battle most of the way, the Edgewood College men's soccer team dropped a tough non-conference decision, 4-2, to St. Norbert College at Breese Stevens Field Friday night.

The Eagles (0-1) were able to knot up the score twice throughout the match, but were never able to capture the go-ahead goal they needed to control the tempo. Early in the first half, Green Knights (1-0) forward Aaron Benson put a ball from Adam Sanchez in the back of the net to give St. Norbert the lead in the 19th minute of play.

Sanchez would be involved in the next St. Norbert goal as well as he used a half volley off a header from Kevin Conrath to give the Green Knights the lead again. On each of those goals the Eagles were able to find the equalizer. The first coming from Jerrid Dokey off a beautiful header from Greg Dezell and the second on an unassisted goal by Andy Witek in which he was able to avert the ball from the Green Knights keeper on a breakaway to tie the game at two-a-piece, one Eagle goal coming in each half.

St. Norbert was able to control the ball for the majority of the second half and was able to pull away late in the match by scoring two goals after the 78th minute of regulation. What put the game out of reach for good was a Ben Vanden Avond one touch goal off a cross in the 89th minute to seal the deal at 4-2.

St. Norbert managed five corner kicks during the match. The Eagles were unfortunate to get a single one all night. The Green Knights also outshot Edgewood College 19-10. Both teams notched 12 fouls each in a very physical game which also saw two yellow cards, one from each side.

The Eagles take to the pitch again on Sunday, August 31, when they'll take on Maryville University (Mo.) at approximately 1 p.m. It will follow the women's match that begins at 11 a.m.
