MEQUON, Wis. (Feb. 7, 2008) – Junior Chris DeMarco poured in 27 points and the Eagles made nine of ten free throws down the stretch in an 84-80 Edgewood College victory at Concordia University Wisconsin. The key road win, avenges a 68-53 Falcon victory from two weeks ago, and keeps the Eagles one-half game behind Marian College for second place heading into a Saturday showdown with fourth place Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Edgewood College (12-8, 9-4 NAC) surrendered the first 11 points of the game before Charlie Averkamp scored a pair of buckets to get the Eagles on the scoreboard. The Eagles recovered quickly tying the game at 20, and went into the halftime break trailing 37-36.
The two teams were tied at 68 with 6:08 to play, until an Aaron Ritschard free throw, a jump shot by Averkamp and a pair of Chris DeMarco lay-ups gave the Eagles a 75-69 lead with just under three minutes to play. From that point, Concordia Wisconsin (12-8, 7-6 NAC) trimmed the Eagles’ lead to two points four separate times, but John Schuster made four free throws down the stretch including the final two with two seconds remaining.
DeMarco made 10 of 14 shots and the field and scored 19 points in the second half on his way to a 27-point night for Edgewood College. Averkamp again flirted with a triple-double recording 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. John Schuster and John Fahey each added 11 points. The Eagles shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the second half and finished the game at 53.4 percent. The Eagles dominated the glass pulling down 44 rebounds compared to Concordia Wisconsin’s 25 boards.
For the Falcons, David Lipanot posted a team-high 23 points, while Josh Atkinson added 18 points and seven rebounds. The Falcons were hampered by 13 missed free throws.
