MADISON, Wis. - A pair of Lakeland College goals early in each half spelled trouble for the Edgewood College men's soccer team, as the Eagles fell to the Muskies 3-2 in a Northern Athletics Conference match at Breese Stevens Field.
Lakeland College (6-4, 5-1 NAC) got on the board in the 13th minute when a Kevin Finchett shot trickled away from Edgewood College goalkeeper Shane Sullivan and Ryan Malo banged it home for a 1-0 Muskie lead. Ted Cormier put the Muskies up two goals with a well placed strike from 20 yards out.
Edgewood College (5-7, 3-3 NAC) wouldn't go down quietly as they kept pressure on through the latter part of the first half. Finally, in the 41st minute, Brandon Jerstad was taken down in the penalty area. Greg Dezell converted the penalty kick into the lower right corner to cut the lead in half.
The backbreaker for the Eagles came shortly after halftime, when Malo flicked a Derek Pitterle cross on to Adam Benson. Benson struck the ball on a short hop, beating Sullivan to his right and giving the Muskies a 3-1 lead.
Edgewood College threatened to stage a remarkable comeback, after Andriy Apetrey fed Brad Swenson for his first career goal with 3:15 left to play. However, the Eagles were unable to mount another attack in the short time left, allowing Lakeland to escape with the victory.
The Eagles will attempt to get back on the winning side this Saturday when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
