MADISON, Wis. (Jan. 23, 2008) – Concordia University Wisconsin led by John Ulrich and his 18 points knocked off Edgewood College 68-53, Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Conference men’s basketball game at the Edgedome. It was a tough night for the Eagles who were playing without Charlie Averkamp, the conference’s leading rebounder and the team’s second leading scorer. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Eagles and is their first loss in the 2008 calendar year.
Edgewood College hung with the Falcons for a majority of the game. The Falcons, holding a slim 51-45 lead, went on a 12-2 run that included two Steve Huenink three-pointers to extend their lead to a game-high 16 points with only 1:27 remaining, effectively ending any hope of an Edgewood College comeback.
The Eagles led by five points with 5:26 remaining in the first half before the Falcons tied the game at 29 apiece, with five of their seven points coming from John Ulrich. That would be the last time Edgewood College held a lead as the Falcons took a 32-30 lead into halftime.
Concordia Wisconsin showed why they are ranked eighth nationally in steals per game, finishing with 13 steals and forcing 23 Eagle turnovers. Falcons John Ulrich ended the night as the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, 12 of which coming from three-point range. Teammate Steve Huenink finished close behind Ulrich with 17 points, including shooting three-for-five from beyond the arc and getting four steals. DeShaun Robinson added 10 points while Travis Moulton had a game-high five steals.
John Fahey ended the night as the Eagles leading scorer as he dropped 16 points on seven-for-11 shooting. Chris DeMarco added 13 and tied for a game-high nine rebounds with teammate Jon Ciche who also finished with a game-high six blocks. The Eagles struggled from the free throw line shooting 21.4 percent, only making three buckets from the charity stripe.
The loss drops the Eagles to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the NAC while the Falcons improve to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in conference. Edgewood College returns to action on Saturday, January 26 as the take on Aurora University at the Edgedome. Saturday’s game is the third annual “Jam the Gym” event. Tip off is slated for 4:15 p.m. with the men’s alumni game following the conclusion of the men’s game. The game will be webcast live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
