Volleyball opens 2007 season with two matches

MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 4, 2007) -- Edgewood College volleyball opened its 2007 season with with two matches Tuesday at St. Norbert College. UW-Oshkosh, ranked 9th in the CSTV/AVCA NCAA Division III Coaches Top 25 preseason poll, defeated the Eagles 3-0 (30-11, 30-21, 30-16) in the neutral game. Edgewood College then fell 3-0 (30-23, 30-18, 30-28) to the host Green Knights.

UW-Oshkosh jumped ahead early, leading by as many as 21-3 in game one, and finished strong by ending game three with a 15-1 run. Kim Paskey (Poynette, Wis.) led the Eagles with six kills, including an impressive .455 attack percentage. The Titan offense was equally as impressive, however, hitting .403 as a team. Amber Hewitt (DeForest, Wis.) and Katie Stankowski (Franklin, Wis.) each had a pair of service aces in the three-game match.

Hewitt led the offensive charge in the match against St. Norbert with nine kills on 27 attacks to go along with two more service aces and 10 digs. Stankowski, Karyn Jordahl (Portage, Wis.), and Laura Thorson (Eau Claire, Wis.) also garnered 10 digs. Thorson, a freshman, posted a team-high 17 assists.

Other top supporting cast members versus the Green Knights  included Greta Gueths (Shawano, Wis.), who recorded eight kills on 20 attacks and just one error (.350 attack percentage), and five more kills  from Paskey. Freshman Laura Thorson (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished with 17 assists.

Edgewood College will be back on the road this weekend at the UW-Platteville Volleyball Tournament where, again, they will face some of the top regional and national competition. The Eagles will play two matches on Friday, Sept. 7 followed by two more matches on Saturday morning.
