Eagles downed by Maranatha Baptist in home opener

MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 13, 2007) – Edgewood College lost three tight games in a 3-1 loss Thursday to Maranatha Baptist Bible College in the Eagles’ home opener from the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The Crusaders (4-4, 1-1 NAC) won 20-30, 33-31, 34-32, 30-27 to drop the Eagles to 0-8 (0-2 NAC).

As a team, the Eagles hit for a .279 attack percentage in game one to claim their first single-game victory of the season, but it gradually declined from their despite hitting better than the Crusaders for the match.

After getting edged narrowly in game two, the Eagles opened up game three with a 6-1 lead and led by as many as seven points at 10-3. But Maranatha Baptist eventually came all the way back to tie it up at 17-17 on a service ace by Kedra DeLozier.

Senior Greta Gueths (Shawano, Wis.) posted a career-high 19 kills on 41 attacks with a .341 attack percentage. Amber Hewitt (Waunakee, Wis.) followed with 14 kills. Kim Paskey (Poynette, Wis.) boasted a .346 attack percentage, including nine kills without an attack error. Hewitt also served up five aces in the match.
Coordinating most of the Eagles’ offense was Hannah Williams (Richland Center, Wis.) and Laura Thorson (Eau Claire, Wis.). Williams dished out 25 assists and Thorson had 20.

Defensively, four Edgewood College players recorded double figures in digs led by Katie Stankowski (Franklin, Wis.) who finished with a career-high 36 digs. Williams and Karyn Jordahl (Portage, Wis.) tallied 20 and 15 digs, respectively. Paskey and Laura Horsch (New Holstein, Wis.) each put up three blocks.

Edgewood College will play a non-conference match next Tuesday, Sept. 18 at Ripon College.
