AURORA, Ill. (May 5, 2007) – Edgewood College’s bid for the 2007 Northern Athletics Conference Softball Tournament Championship fell short Saturday as the Eagles lost to top-seed and tournament host Aurora University 3-2 in the title round. The fifth-seeded Eagles first knocked off No. 2 Lakeland College, 6-2, after working their way through the loser’s bracket.
An RBI double by Stacey Ley (Dodgeville, Wis.) tied the game with Lakeland at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Muskies took the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the frame. Edgewood College then exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Noelle Wimer. The comeback came off of Muskies pitcher Sara Roberts, who had no-hit the Eagles earlier in the season. Wimer and Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) each had two hits and Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) earned the complete game victory.
Borre pitched another complete game in the nightcap, a three-hitter against Aurora University, which as a team was batting was batting over .370 against NAC pitching during the regular season. A wild pitch led to the Spartans first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Wimer again came through in the clutch with an RBI single in the fourth inning to knot the game at 1-1.
Aurora manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) drove in Leslie Bell (Monona, Wis.) who doubled with one out in the seventh, but the tying run remained on first base as fellow Eagle pitcher Brittany Butcher picked up the win for the Spartans by retiring the next two Eagle batters.
Edgewood College finishes the season with a 24-18 (14-8 NAC) record.
