AURORA, Ill. (May 3, 2007) – Edgewood College survived first round action Thursday by defeating Benedictine University 4-2 at Stuart Sportsplex, site of the 2007 Northern Athletics Conference Softball Tournament. The fifth-seeded Eagles (21-16) will now play top-seed and tournament host Aurora University (32-8) in the second round. First pitch versus the Spartans is Friday, May 4 at 9 a.m.
Colleen Joyce (Madison, Wis.) knocked a two-out, RBI single to highlight a two-run first inning. Benedictine manufactured a run in the bottom of the third to get back to within one and held the Eagles scoreless until the top of the seventh.
Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.), who finished with a complete game four-hitter in the pitcher’s circle, singled to left field to lead off the seventh inning. Leslie Bell (Monona, Wis.) drove in the first run of the frame with a single to center and Jamie Kurt (Dane, Wis.) capped off a 4-for-4 game at the plate with another run-scoring single. In seven innings, Borre allowed two earned runs, walked two, and struck out two.
