FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 21, 2007) – Concordia University (Wis.) plated the game winning run in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Edgewood College 2-1 Saturday in game one of Northern Athletics Conference softball action from McGaw Park. The Eagles pounded out 10 hits in game two to manage a split with a 7-3 victory. The doubleheader marked the home opener for Edgewood College following 24 previous games on the road.

Leslie Bell (Monona, Wis.) scored in the bottom of the first inning of game one when Jamie Kurt (Dane, Wis.) reached on an error with two outs. The Falcons came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on Sarah Rennicke’s solo homerun to left-centerfield.

With the score still tied entering the top of the seventh, the Falcons’ Erica Thiede laced a single to left field. The speedy Thiede then stole second base and scored the eventual winning run on an RBI single from Jenna DiMaggio that barely got past a diving Colleen Joyce (Madison, Wis.) at third base. Rennicke, the starting pitcher for Concordia, allowed five hits in seven innings. Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) picked up the loss after allowing just six hits, including six strikeouts, in the complete-game effort.

Kurt hit a towering two-run homer to left-center, her team-leading fifth of the season, in her first at-bat in game two to help give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Tara Wagner’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning knotted the score at 2-2 until the Edgewood College bats exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth.

Bell led off the inning with a triple followed by a double by Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.), who finished the day 5-for-6 at the plate to raise her batting average to .410 on the season. A pair of Falcons errors in the frame also led to their demise. The Eagles tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the seventh. Jenna Ryan (Waunakee, Wis.) earned the win to improve to 7-4 in the pitcher’s circle.
