LISLE, Ill. (April 2, 2007)-Just two days after getting soundly swept by Aurora University, the Edgewood College Eagle softball team (10-8, 4-2 NAC) responded mightily with a sweep of conference foe, Benedictine University (8-10, 4-2 NAC). In game one, the Eagles of Edgewood College shutout the Eagles of Benedictine, 4-0. In game two, Edgewood prevailed by a score of 5-2. Today’s double-header was a rescheduled game after the teams were rained out back on March 24. Prior to the day, Benedictine was undefeated in conference play.
Game 1 of the double-header witnessed senior pitcher Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) pitch a gem. Borre pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only four Benedictine hits and striking out a game-day high, 9 batters. The Eagles scored 2-runs in both the third and fifth inning and were paced offensively behind the bat of third baseman Colleen Joyce (Madison, Wis.) who went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s. Joyce would add 2 runs and an additional hit on two at bats in game 2, accomplishing a well-rounded offensive performance on the day.
Benedictine’s only true threat came in the first inning when Borre gave up 2 hits and recorded a wild pitch, sending Benedictine third baseman Nikki Schagel to third base. Borre then struck out the next batter and proceeded to finish the game convincingly, controlling the Benedictine batters the rest of the way.
Game 2 saw another steady offensive and defensive effort from Edgewood College in their 5-2 victory. The Eagles of Edgewood scored all of their 5 runs in the first three innings, which included a three-run second inning led behind a lead-off triple from Colleen Joyce (Madison, Wis.). Designated hitter, Noelle Wimer (Dodgeville, Wis.) went a strong 2-for-2 in the game, including a triple and 1 RBI.
With the game seemingly in reach and a 5-1 lead heading into the last inning, Benedictine scored a run and managed to load up the bases, bringing the winning run to the plate. Pitcher Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) came in relief of Jenna Ryan (Waunakee, Wis.) after a formidable effort. The Eagles managed to get out of the inning when Borre struck out Benedictine pitcher, Lisa Ryback, preserving the sweep for Edgewood College.
The Eagles hope to build off their strong road sweep and look for some winning consistency when they head back to Madison to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday, April 4. The game will take place at McGaw Park in Fitchburg, Wis. The double-header will begin at 4:00pm. Come out and cheer for your Eagles!
