MADISON, Wis. (March 5, 2007) -- Edgewood College opened its 2007 softball season at the Finlandia University Invitational this past weekend at the Superior Dome in Marquette, Mich. The Eagles won both their games on Saturday, March 3, including a combined no-hitter against Crown College (Minn.). Edgewood College finished the tournament on Sunday with an overall record of 2-2 to start the season.
In Saturday's season opener, senior Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) and freshman Stephanie Meehan (Janesville, Wis.), in her first collegiate appearance, retired 15 of the 18 batters they faced in managing to keep Crown College hitless in a shortened five-inning game which the Eagles won 11-0.
It then took Edgewood College extra frames to defeat tournament host Finlandia 8-7 in 11 innings. Jamie Kurt led off the top of the 11th with one of her four homeruns on the weekend.
Sunday's action began with 6-4 loss to The College of St. Catherine (Minn.). The Eagles then dropped a 3-1 decision to UW-Oshkosh. Edgewood College's lone run against the Titans was a solo homerun by Kurt off off of Ronessa Stampfli, the 2006 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year.
Edgewood College will be back in action March 16 with games versus Dickinson College (Pa.) and Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., where they will play a total of six games.
