Flynn shuts out Dominican as Eagles split on road

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (March 31, 2007) – Cody Flynn (Eureka, Calif.) threw a thirteen-strikeout extra-inning shutout in the Edgewood College Eagles’ (10-7, 3-3 NAC) split today against the Dominican University Stars (6-12, 1-5 NAC) at the Schaumburg Flyers’ Alexian Field. Flynn marked his win in game one with a score of 1-0 after ten innings. The Eagles were outshined by the Stars 0-2 in game two of the doubleheader.

The Eagles’ bats were not hitting well for the duration of game one as they only placed six runners on base within nine innings. Nate Meyer (Waterford, Wis.) almost scored in the third inning when he hit a ball deep into right field for a stand-up triple until he got caught in a rundown as the Stars’ catcher caught Meyer stranded between third and home. Though Flynn struck out a large number of batters, he had to contend with twelve base-runners as he allowed eight hits, walked two, and hit two batters. His defense were there to help him as they contributed a rundown pickoff in the third, a double play in the sixth, an impressive diving catch by center-fielder Cory McCullick (Hudson, Ill.), and a foul catch by third-baseman Jimy Landwehr (Hartland, Wis.) that sent him into the Eagles’ dugout. Landwehr also grabbed a run in the tenth which was enough to give Edgewood College game one.

In game two, the Eagles were only able to put eight runners on base, with only one of them reaching third base. Defensively, Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.) allowed three hits in the second inning which would bring in the Stars’ two runs for game two. Though striking out eight batters, it wasn’t enough for the Eagles to pull through.

The Eagles head down to Missouri to play a single game at Washington College of St. Louis this Monday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m.
