AURORA, Ill. (March, 31 2007)-The Edgewood College softball team (8-8, 2-2 NAC) lost a pair of games to Aurora University (13-5, 4-0 NAC) Saturday in a doubleheader, 7-1 and 3-1, respectively. The loss dropped the Eagles to .500 overall and also in NAC play.
The Eagles gave up a four-run fourth inning to the Spartans in game one of the day, prompting Aurora to victory. Things started out well enough for the Eagles in the game, as they climbed out to a 1-0 lead thanks in part to Jes Stephens’ (St. Charles, Ill.) lead off double, followed by Leslie Bell’s RBI single to left field. That would be about all the Eagles would manage offensively the rest of the way. The Eagles wound up with 5 total hits in the game. Kristin Borre (4-5) (Beloit, Wis.) pitched 6 innings, allowing 12 Spartan hits and striking out three.
In game two, the Eagles were still unable to find any offensive spark. Although the Eagles were able to hang around defensively, it was the inclement weather that eventually ended the game after 6 innings and aided the Spartans in claiming victory again, 3-1. The Stephen sisters, Jes and Jen (St. Charles, Ill.), combined for half of the Eagles 6 hits in the game. The difference would come in the top of the first inning when first baseman, Julie Beenes of Aurora University, belted a 2-run homerun off of Eagle pitcher, Jenna Ryan (4-3) (Waunakee, Wis.). The Eagles were on the brink of a comeback as they threatened quickly and often late in the game, but could only muster 1 run in the fifth and sixth innings combined, leaving 4 stranded and aggravated runners on base. The Eagles would not get a chance in the final inning, as mother nature wanted to see no more baseball at the Stuart Sportsplex in Aurora, officially concluding the Eagles’ frustrating day.
The Eagles hope to bounce back quickly when they face Benedictine University in a make-up game on Monday, April 2 in Lisle, Ill. The double-header is set to begin at 3:00pm local time.
