MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (March 2, 2007) – The Edgewood College baseball team opened its season by splitting a doubleheader in the Eagles (1-1) season opening doubleheader against the Warhawks of UW-Whitewater (1-1). Junior right-handed pitcher Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.) hurled a four-hit shutout in tonight’s second-game, 2-0 victory, over the Warhawks who are ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division III preseason poll.

In game one, the Eagles stormed to an early lead by scoring a run in top of the first inning. The Warhawks would take the offensive and match the Eagles’ run to finish off the second. Eagles starting pitcher, Cody Flynn (Eureka, Calif.), kept the Warhawks scoreless in the second inning before allowing UW-Whitewater the third inning lead. The Eagles played hard, but the Warhawks’ momentum would continue through the next two innings including a one-run homerun by UW-Whitewater junior Tom Corcoran. The Eagle offense would go scoreless for the rest of the game to finish with a score of 4-2.

The momentum would change in the second game as Dictus took the mound. Only one Warhawk made it on base in each of the first three innings. At the same time, Edgewood College junior Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) would score the Eagles’ first run of the game. The Warhawks offense would make a stand in the fourth, loading the bases with just one out. Dictus was able to stay focused, and with the help of Reynolds in left field and Matt Werner (Centennial, Colo.) behind the plate, the Eagles would make a double play from the fly-out to Reynolds and the quick throw to tag the third-base runner at the plate. Reynolds would steal the show next inning by catching 3 fly balls including a catch made while diving backwards. Edgewood College would emerge victorious with a score of 2-0.
