TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (March 18, 2007) – The Edgewood College Eagles (7-4, 0-0 NAC) finish their southern trip with two wins at this year’s Engineer Invitational against the Mount Union College Purple Raiders (Alliance, Ohio) and the hosting Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Engineers. The Eagles defeated the Purple Raiders 10-3, and won 8-6 against the Engineers.
In the first game against the Purple Raiders, Edgewood brought in two runs to start the game. Mount Union College struck right back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Edgewood scored six more runs in the second inning to secure the game as well as force an early pitching change for the Purple Raiders. On the defensive end, junior pitcher Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.) pitched the entire nine innings only allowing one more run off of a homer in the seventh. Dictus finished the day with five strikeouts, three walks, and three earned runs off of nine hits.
In game two against the Engineers, pitchers Derek Eitel and Cody Flynn (Eureka, Calif.) engaged in a pitcher’s duel, each allowing only two runs, in the first six innings. The Engineers scored another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give them the lead. To top the eighth inning, the Eagles got one runner on base and proceeded with two quick outs. From there, Edgewood College would load the bases off of a hit and a walk. Sophomore outfielder Cory McCullick (Hudson, Ill.) hit a driving ball to deep right center field for a base-clearing triple. The Eagles would finish with five runs for the inning, but the Engineers would not be defeated that easily. Flynn pitched one out before walking the bases loaded and being pulled from the game. Nathan Marlowe (South Milwaukee, Wis.) took the mound to finish off the inning, but each of the three baserunners scored off the next three batters bringing the score up to 7-6. Marlowe would keep the Engineers from scoring again in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the year.
The Edgewood College Eagles start their conference schedule at home this Saturday, March 24 with a doubleheader against Concordia University Chicago starting at noon.
