Tucson, Ariz. (March 16, 2007) – On day one of the Tucson Invitational, the Edgewood College softball team came away from the day with a split of their first two slated games, losing 9-4 to Dickinson College (Carlisle, Pa.) in the first game and managing a 6-4 victory over St. Scholastica (Duluth, Minn.) in game two. The day’s games signaled the beginning of the Eagles' 2007 Tucson Invitational campaign, in which they will play a total of six non-conference games in a span of three days.
In game one, the Eagles were unable to silence the Dickinson College bats, as the Eagles allowed scoring in all but two of the seven innings, including two runs in each of the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, en route to giving up 12 total hits in the game. The Eagles nevertheless seemed poised for a comeback. Down 9-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Eagles made a last effort dash at Dickinson. Jen Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) doubled down the left field line, scoring her sister, Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.). After two more clutch singles by the Eagles and a Dickinson College error, the Eagles last gasp at a comeback was eventually dashed when Noelle Wimer (Dodgeville, Wis.) was picked off at second base, ending the game.
The Eagles did manage 12 hits respectively in the game, with Noelle Wimer (Dodgeville, Wis.) leading the way for the Eagles with three of her own. Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) pitched four complete innings striking out three and allowing six runs.
In game two, the Eagles bounced back strongly against St. Scholastica. Battling in a tight game down 3-4, the Eagles picked up three runs in bottom of the fifth inning to pull away for good, capped with an exclamatory homerun from freshman Colleen Joyce (Madison, Wis). The Eagles managed six runs on 10 hits in the game, led by a game high five RBI’s from the aforementioned Joyce.
With the split, the Eagles now move to 3-3 overall on their young season. They hit the field again quickly, returning to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 17, with another two games slated to be played against Kalamazoo College and Eastern Connecticut State.
