MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (March 10, 2006) – The Edgewood College Eagles (3-3, 0-0 NAC) brought in two wins this weekend against the Pioneers (2-2, 0-0 Midwest Conference) of Grinnell College. The Eagles finished game one strong with a score of 5-3. Edgewood College scored runs early in the second game and won with a score of 3-2.

The Eagles struggled offensively early in Saturday night’s first game, getting four people to third base but bringing in none after three innings. It had looked like Cody Flynn (Eureka, Calif.) was going to struggle as well – hitting the batter on his first pitch – Flynn got back into the inning, striking out the next two batters and picking off the base runner with help from sophomore first-baseman Nate Meyer (Waterford, Wis.) and sophomore second-baseman Alex Berta (Normal, Ill.). The Eagles would remain scoreless through the end of the fifth inning, while the Pioneers would pick up three runs. Inning six began strong with Berta and senior Tyler Dahmen (Madison, Wis.) getting back-to-back hits. Designated hitter Ryan Siebert (Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) brought in both runs by hitting a triple to the center field wall. Siebert would make the tying run off of a double by sophomore catcher Matt Werner (Centennial, Colo.). Edgewood hitters would score two more runs while their defense kept the Pioneers from scoring again for a final score of 5-3.

In game two, the Eagle offense started strong, scoring all three of their points in the second inning. The Edgewood College defense, led by Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.), kept the Pioneers scoreless until the fourth inning. The Pioneers led off the fourth with a double down the left field line. The base runner moved to third base off of a wild pitch. The next batter hard hit a ground ball that was heading for left center field when junior shortstop Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) made the diving snatch, got up on his knees and threw the out at first. The next play also involved Reynolds as he caught a fly ball in the shallow outfield, but the next batsman hit a single and brought in the Pioneer’s first run. Dictus would pickoff that runner with help from Siebert and Berta. Grinnell College would get another run in the sixth. In the seventh, the Pioneer’s got two men on with a walk and a single. Both runners took another base off a sacrifice bunt, but Dictus would abruptly finish the game by catching a line drive and throwing out the third base runner before the tag-up for the double play.

The Eagles will begin their southern trip with a doubleheader against Christian Brothers University at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15 in Memphis, Tenn.
