Eagles come back from deficit to beat Benedictine

Kyle Scott

MADISON, Wis. (February 16, 2007) -- The Edgewood College men's basketball team came back after a nine point first half deficit to beat the Eagles of Benedictine by the score of 64-58. The College shot a mere 24-percent in the first half but rebounded to shoot 54.5-percent in the second en route to the "Senior Day" victory.

After being ahead for most of the first half, the Eagles (16-7, 14-3 NAC) went blank with under eight minutes in the half as they missed eight straight field goal attempts and six three point attempts. Meanwhile, the Eagles (12-13, 10-8 NAC) of Benedictine went on a 9-0 run to end the half up by nine.

With 10 minutes remaining in the second half, the Eagles of Edgewood College stepped up their game as they chipped away at the Benedictine lead and took their first lead since the nine minute mark in the first half after Brian Donais (Milwaukee, Wis.) drilled a three-pointer. Benedictine fought back as they went on a 7-1 run to retake the lead until John Fahey (Oregon, Wis.) converted on a three-pointer and followed that up with a lay-up off of his own steal to give the lead back to Edgewood. The College took the momentum from Fahey's play as they went on a 13-0 run during the next three and a half minutes due to tenacious defense that forced four steals and two Jon Ciche (Franklin, Wis.) blocks. Evan Klees (Madison, Wis.) made sure that Benedictine would stay at bay as he threw down his second dunk of the evening with authority to bring the lead to 12 with 1:15 remaining.

With leading scorer, Chris DeMarco (Appleton, Wis.) watching from the sidelines, second leading scorer Charlie Averkamp (New Berlin, Wis.) put together his finest scoring effort as he led both teams with 28 points, 16 of which coming from the first half. Kyle Scott (Burlington, Wis.) summed up his home regular season career at Edgewood College by scoring 16 points including three crucial three-pointers to help aid the Eagle victory. Other senior Les Wilkinson (Blue Mounds, Wis.) went out on top as an Eagle at home as he filled in nicely for the injured DeMarco as he scored one point in 17 solid minutes. Ciche reached the 100 block milestone at Edgewood College as he went on collect four blocked shots on the night.

The Eagles now will travel to Rockford, Ill. for the regular season wrap-up with the Regents before they head home for the Northern Athletics Conference Semi-final on Friday the 23rd at 7:05 p.m. where they host the winner of No. 6 Benedictine, and No. 3 Dominican University
