MADISON, Wis. (Dec. 8, 2007) – Chris DeMarco tied the career-high in points he established four days earlier and Charlie Averkamp had a double-double, but too many turnovers, too many missed free throws and some lights out shooting by MSOE spelled a 76-63 setback for Edgewood College spoiling their home opener.
A key 19-3 Raider run in the middle of the first half gave MSOE a 25-13 lead which they would nurse throughout the game. MSOE (4-2, 1-1 NAC) would made eight of nine shots in that stretch, while the Eagles committed five turnovers and missed their only field goal attempt. By the end of the first half, MSOE had outshot Edgewood College (2-4, 1-2 NAC) 60 percent to 35 percent and held a 37-28 lead.
In the second half, the Eagles turned up the full court pressure and seemed poised to get back into the game. On seven different occasions, the Eagles cut the Raiders’ lead to seven points, but each time MSOE would answer and maintain their cushion.
DeMarco led all scorers with 30 points, matching his career-high he set last Tuesday at Maranatha Baptist. He did much of his damaged from the free throw line going 12-for-17. His 10 rebounds gave him his second straight double-double. Averkamp tied his season-high in rebounds pulling down 13 boards, including 10 in the first half, and adding 15 points. Aaron Ritschard led the team with five assists and three steals. The Eagles committed a season-high 21 turnovers and shot just 63.6 percent (21-for-33) from the free throw line.
The Raiders had four players in double figures, led by Andy Voigt’s 17 points on six-for-10 shooting. Scott Murphy scored 16 points before fouling out and Austin Meier added 14 points.
Edgewood College will be back in action on Wednesday night when the fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers venture to the Edgedome. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live at www.EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
