Volleyball concludes play at Cal State East Bay tourney

FREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2007) – Cal State East Bay, host of the Wild West Shootout volleyball tournament, defeated Edgewood College 3-0 in the Eagles’ (7-16) first match Saturday followed by a 3-0 non-conference loss to fellow Northern Athletics Conference opponent Concordia University Wisconsin.

Cal State East Bay (22-2) entered this weekend’s tournament ranked No. 13 in the CSTV/AVCA NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, the second nationally ranked opponent the Eagles faced in two days. The Pioneers won handily on their home court 30-16, 30-17, 30-18 and served up 11 aces while hitting .366 as a team in the process.  Laura Horsch (New Holstein, Wis.) led the Eagles in kills with six and Kim Lueck (Wausau, Wis.) registered 21 digs.

Concordia downed the Eagles 30-22, 30-26, 30-28. Kim Paskey (Poynette, Wis.) led the Eagles with eight kills and six blocks. Amber Hewitt (DeForest, Wis.) managed just six kills on 32 attack attempts, but recorded 12 digs, defensively. Lueck (Wausau, Wis.) again led the team in digs with 22.

Edgewood College will return to Madison late Monday evening and will return to Northern Athletics Conference action on Oct. 17 when they face Marian College at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The match against the Sabres is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
