MADISON, Wis. (September 6, 2006) – Stephanie Gatyas scored twice in the first twenty five minutes of action Wednesday night, but Edgewood College came back to defeat St. Norbert College in women’s soccer, 3-2, from Breese Stevens Field. Forward Erika Thompson (Waukesha, Wis.) netted the game winner, unassisted, in overtime.
Trailing 2-0 early on, the Eagles (1-2) caught a break on an own goal when the ball ricocheted off a St. Norbert (0-2) defender at the 32:31 mark. The two teams played the ball back and forth for the remainder of the first half and well into the second until Kelli Sullivan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) scored the equalizer on an assist from Laura Marx (New Berlin, Wis.) in the 78th minute.
Edgewood had plenty of scoring opportunities with 24 shots in the match, 16 of which were on goal. Elyse Clouthier (Oconomowoc, Wis.) led the Eagles with six shots on goal, but was unable to capitalize. Green Knight goalkeeper Sarah Martinez registered nine saves.
This Saturday, Sept. 9, Edgewood will visit Greenville College in Greenville, Ill. to take on the Panthers (1-1) at 11 a.m.
