Red Hawks spoil Edgewood’s home opener

MADISON, Wis. (September 6, 2006) – Ripon College came into the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Wednesday night for a non-conference women’s volleyball match and defeated Edgewood College 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-18) in the Eagles’ home opener.

The visiting Red Hawks (3-2) used a well-balanced offensive attack, as Ripon hit .364 in the three-game match. Freshman Laura Horsch (New Holstein, Wis.) tallied 10 kills on 24 attacks to lead the Eagles (0-5), while Dayna McCauley (Cuba City, Wis.) registered 26 assists.

The Eagles, who jumped out to an early lead in game one, eventually found themselves trailing 22-19 before Ripon rattled off eight of the next 10 points to close it out. Five of Horsch’s 10 kills game in the first game.

Edgewood again led in the second game until the Red Hawks tied it up at 12-12 on an Eagle attack error. Ripon middle hitter Jeni Yaeger followed with a kill and the Red Hawks never looked back by maintaining the advantage the rest of the way on into game three as they quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead, including a stretch of seven straight points late in the match.

Edgewood will travel to Platteville, Wis. for this weekend’s UW-Platteville, where they will play the host Pioneers (4 p.m.) along with Lawrence University (6 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 8. On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Eagles will take on Simpson College (noon) and Monmouth College (2 p.m.).
