MADISON, Wis. (September 2, 2006) – The Edgewood College women’s soccer team lost its second heartbreaker in as many days Saturday with a 2-1 home loss to Macalester College from Breese Stevens Field. Both of the Scots’ goals came in the second half, as Macalester out-shot the Eagles 14-1 in the final period.
It took some time, however, for the Scots, ranked tenth in the NCAA Division III preseason poll, to find their groove as Edgewood controlled possession for most of the first forty five minutes. Provided with some good scoring opportunities early on, the Eagles eventually got on the scoreboard to take an early lead in the closing seconds of the first half.
Freshman Tammi Hagensick (Madison, Wis.) beat the clock -- and the Macalester College goalkeeper -- on a free kick just outside the penalty box with five seconds remaining to give Edgewood College a 1-0 advantage moments before the intermission.
But the Scots’ (2-0) offense quickly kicked into high gear. Annie Borton found the back of the net at the 54:06 mark on a nice header sent off of a corner kick by Anne Kintop to even the score at 1-1. Approximately fifteen minutes later Grace King tallied the go-ahead goal.
Goalkeeper Larissa Nach (Monroe, Wis.) made her first collegiate start for the Eagles. The freshman was credited with seven saves and displayed a presence between the posts that made her look like an upperclassmen at times. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ offense fired seven shots on goal.
With the loss, Edgewood falls to 0-2 on the young 2006 season. The Eagles will host St. Norbert College at Breese Stevens Field in Madison on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
