Eagles stopped by Lakeland in NAC volleyball opener

MADISON, Wis. (September 12, 2006) – Edgewood College was defeated by Lakeland College, 3-1, Tuesday in the Northern Athletics Conference volleyball season opener from the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

After losing the first two games by scores of 30-22 and 30-17, the Eagles (0-10, 0-1 NAC) battled back to win game three, 30-27, before the visiting Muskies (5-0, 1-0 NAC) cruised to a 30-20 win in the fourth and final game.

Edgewood trailed by as many as five points early in game three, but came from behind to tie the Muskies at 18-18 on a block assist from Kim Paskey (Poynette, Wis.) and Laura Horsch (New Holstein, Wis.). the two teams battled over the next couple of points before a kill by Greta Gueths (Shawano, Wis.) gave the Eagles the lead for good at 24-23.

Gueths and Paskey led Edgewood with eight kills each, but even the two middle hitters could not over power the Lakeland defense. The Muskies boasted three players with double figures in digs and tallied a total of seven team blocks. Inthava Borihane (Green Bay, Wis.) paced the Eagles with 13 blocks followed by 11 blocks from Hannah Schultz (Clinton, Wis.).

The Muskies’ Ashley Domask registered a match-high 17 kills on 39 attack attempts, while Jessica Sparling had 46 assists.

Edgewood College will travel to Appleton, Wis. this Thursday, Sept. 14 to take on Lawrence University in a non-conference match scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
