Women's soccer downed in double overtime

MADISON, Wis. (September 1, 2006) – Gustavus Adolphus College broke a 1-1 tie at the 102:30 mark as Kirsten Thulien found the back of the net off a Gusties corner kick in double overtime to defeat Edgewood College 2-1 in non-conference women’s soccer action Friday at Breese Stevens Field.

In the season opener for both teams, it was the Gusties who got off to a quick start by taking advantage of an Edgewood College hand ball inside the box. Amy Larson captalized on the ensuing penalty kick at 29:41 to give Gustavus Adolphus an early 1-0 lead.

The Gusties carried the lead into halftime, but the Eagles struck quickly in the second half. Freshman Kara Peppler (Madison, Wis.) tallied her first collegiate goal moments into the second half -- the equalizer -- to make it 1-1.

Eagles keeper Brittany Labno (Madison, Wis.) had seven saves in the match as the Gusties tallied a total of 13 shots, nine of which were on goal. However, Edgewood also had its fair share of opportunities. Sophomore forward Erika Thompson (Waukesha, Wis.) fired off three shots, while Peppler and fellow newcomer Elyse Clouthier (Oconomowoc, Wis.) had two shots each.

Tomorrow’s competition will not get any easier for the Eagles. Edgewood will host Macalester College, ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division III preseason poll, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2. The match will be played at Breese Stevens Field.
