Men's soccer grinds to a 0-0 tie

MADISON, Wis. (September 1, 2006) – The 2006 season opener for Edgewood College was neither a won nor a loss, but rather a 0-0 tie with Gustavus Adolphus College at Breese Stevens Field on Friday afternoon. The Gusties -- ranked No. 12 in the preseason NCAA Division III men’s soccer poll -- garnered 13 corner kicks and doubled the Eagles’ shot total, but Edgewood’s defense prevailed led by junior goalkeeper Ryan Flohr (Fond du Lac, Wis.).

Defense was the mark of the 2004 and 2005 version of the Eagles, who are coming off back-to-back NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Flohr registered five saves on Friday, including four stops against Gusties junior midfielder Jeffrey Johnson. Edgewood fired eight shots on goal with two of those shots coming from the right leg of freshman Andriy Apetrey (Lozani, Ukraine) who, at times, stymied the Gustavus Adolphus defenders with his savvy ball-handling skills.

Perhaps the Eagles best scoring opportunity of the afternoon, however, was a slow roller in traffic from Jerrid Dokey (Green Bay, Wis.) that nearly crept past Gusties keeper Tyler Gerry.

Edgewood will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when Macalester College comes to town for a 3:15 p.m. match at Breese Stevens Field.
