FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 29, 2006) -- Edgewood College swept Concordia University in a Lake Michigan Conference softball doubleheader from McGaw Park on Saturday, 7-2 and 7-3. With the wins, the Eagles (29-11, 16-0 LMC) became the first team since 1998 to go undefeated in league play.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game one, Nichole Johnson (Waunakee, Wis.) hit a two-run homerun to give the Eagles the lead for good. They plated two more runs in the bottom of the second on Jessica Stephens' (St. Charles, Ill.) two-out triple down the right field. Edgewood added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits.
More clutch hitting followed in game two. Jamie Kurt (Dane, Wis.) smacked a double to drive in two runs to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Concordia scored once in the bottom half and two more times in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3. Edgewood got the runs back, however, in the top of the third on a two-out, two-run scoring single by Carrie Clum (Pomona, Colo.) capped off a three-run frame.
Milwaukee School of Engineering was the last LMC team to go undefeated in league play when the Raiders went 12-0 during the 1998 campaign. The LMC tournament begins on Tuesday, May 2. The Eagles, who were crowned LMC champions for the second straight year, receive a bye into the Final Four, which starts on Friday, May 5 at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
