UWSP snaps softball win streak

FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 27, 2006) – UW-Stevens Point snapped a 17-game Edgewood College winning streak, the longest streak in school history, on Thursday by sweeping the Eagles, 6-5 and 7-2, in a non-conference softball doubleheader from McGaw Park.

The Pointers (21-14-1) pounded out 25 hits in the two games, and a total of eight defensive errors by the Eagles (27-11) aided UWSP with five unearned runs.

After plating a pair of runs in the first inning of game one, back-to-back RBI doubles by Korryn  Brooks and Jenny Feidt in the top of the fourth gave the Pointers a comfortable 4-0 lead.

UWSP pitcher Ashley Tobalsky allowed just one Eagle hit through three frames, but Jamie Kurt legged out a one-out infield single and later scored on a wild pitch to get Edgewood on the scoreboard. Two defensive errors by the Pointers in the bottom of the fifth got Edgewood to within one, 4-3.

The Eagles entered their last at-bats trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Nichole Johnson’s (Waunakee, Wis.) one-out single up the middle scooted past the UWSP centerfielder which allowed Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) to score from second base. But with the tying run at first base, Tobalsky got Jenifer Ley (Mineral Point, Wis.) to strikeout and Jamie Kurt (Dane, Wis.) to flyout to right field.

Tobalsky fanned seven batters. She also surrendered one earned run and five hits. Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) also went the distance. Borre gave up 11 hits and five earned runs.

Another streak came to an end in game two – Jenna Ryan’s (Waunakee, Wis.) 11 straight wins was snapped, as the freshman pitcher fell to 12-2 on the season. Ryan’s last loss was March 15. Ryan allowed five hits and two runs in the top of the first inning. UWSP, which scattered 14 hits in the contest, slowly crept out to a 5-0 lead until Noelle Wimer (Dodgeville, Wis.) and Kaitlyn Herzog (Waukesha, Wis.) strung together run scoring singles in the bottom of the sixth to get the Eagles back to within three.

Chances of an Eagle comeback deteriorated quickly, however, as USWP took advantage of two errors that added two more runs to the winning margin.
Ryan went the complete game allowing three earned runs. Wimer went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Eagles offensively.

Edgewood College will host Concordia University in the final doubleheader of the regular season Saturday at McGaw Park. The Eagles (14-0 LMC) will attempt to go undefeated in the Lake Michigan Conference for the first time since 1998, when the league played only a 12-game conference schedule. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
