FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 25, 2006) – Edgewood College softball continued to improve on its school record winning streak Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader sweep against Carroll College. At McGaw Park, the Eagles (27-9) captured game one by a final score of 4-1 and claimed their 17th consecutive victory with a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.

Edgewood was out-hit by the visiting Pioneers (8-17) in both games, but the Eagles were able to capitalize on combination of clutch hits and take advantage of a few defensive miscues by their opponent.

In game one, a two-out error on the Pioneers in the bottom of the third inning loaded the bases and Nichole Johnson (Waunakee, Wis.) drew a walk to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Noelle Wimer (Dodgeville, Wis.) and Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) each drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth and another Pioneer error led to Edgewood’s third run of the frame as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.

A potential complete-game shutout for Eagle pitcher Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) was spoiled when Jessica DeLeon and Amanda Schrimsher led of the top of the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles. Borre still went the distance and allowed just six hits and one earned run.

With a slim 2-1 lead in game two, Johnson’s bases loaded double to center field in the bottom of the second inning plated three runs to widen the margin at 5-1. Carrie Clum (Pomona, Colo.) added another run in the fourth when she advanced to home on a throwing error tagging up on a fly out to right field.

Carroll battled right back, however, with three runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Mindy Benz. Borre relieved starting pitcher Jenna Ryan (Waunakee, Wis.) in the seventh. Borre surrendered a one-out triple to Schrimsher. Benz grounded to the shortstop for the second out and Borre walked the next batter. An error then brought the Pioneers back to within one, 6-5, and allowed the go-ahead run on base. But Borre pitched another ground out to end the game and pick up her first save of the season.

Ryan improved her overall season record to 12-1 and Borre went to 14-6 with the victory in game one. Offensively, Stephens led the Eagles with four hits and Johnson drove in four runs to lead the Eagles.

Edgewood College will host UW-Stevens Point at McGaw Park this Thursday, April 27. The doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m.
