Eagle softball ensures another 20-win season

MILWAUKEE (April 18, 2006) -- Edgewood College guaranteed its third straight softball season of 20 wins over more with a pair of victories at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday. The Eagles won by scores of 4-3 and 6-1 to extend their winning streak to 11 games. Meanwhile, Edgewood improved its overall record to 21-9 and remained undefeated in the LMC (10-0).

MSOE’s Ashley Edwards led off the bottom of the second inning with a homerun to take an early lead, but Edgewood responded with four runs in the top of the third. Nichole Johnson’s (Waunakee, Wis.) single scored two runs, including the go-ahead, and the Eagles never looked back as they pounded out 12 hits in the contest led by a 3-for-3 performance by Kaitlyn Herzog (Waukesha, Wis.).

The Raiders scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to get back to within one. With two outs, Edgewood pitcher Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) got Edwards to hit a ground ball to third base and Amy Potratz was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run. Borre allowed just three hits in going the distance.

In game two, Edgewood held a 3-0 lead before securing three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pitcher Jenna Ryan (Waunakee, Wis.) held MSOE scoreless until Jackie Brunette’s RBI double with one out in the top of the seventh. Brunette had four of the Raider’s six hits in going 4-for-4 at the plate.

Ryan improved to 9-1 on the season and lowered her league-leading ERA to 1.83. Ryan’s only loss came on March 15 and has since won eight straight decisions. Offensively, Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) picked up three hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
