FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 17, 2006) – Edgewood College (19-9) swept a non-conference softball doubleheader, 1-0 and 8-2, over visiting UW-Platteville (10-16) on Monday afternoon at McGaw Park.
Kristin Borre (Beloit, Wis.) improved to 10-6 in the pitcher’s circle after a three-hit, complete game shutout in game one. Likewise, the Eagles collected just three hits at the plate. Two of those hits came in the top of the sixth inning when the Edgewood also scored its lone run.
Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) led off the sixth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.). Jenifer Ley (Mineral Point, Wis.) followed with a single right field and Jessica Stephens came around to score on an ensuing error on the Pioneers right fielder.
Eagles pitcher Jenna Ryan (Waunakee, Wis.) also came through with a remarkable performance, allowing just seven hits and two earned runs in game two. Ryan improved to 8-1 on the season and added five strikeouts.
Edgewood took advantage of three UW-Platteville errors to score six runs in the bottom of the second inning, including a two-run home run by Kaitlyn Herzog (Waukesha, Wis.). The Eagles pounded out nine hits, seven in the first two frames. Jennifer Stephens went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the team offensively.
