Eagle baseball takes two in Fondy

FOND Du LAC, Wis. (March 27, 2006) -- Edgewood College (11-5, 2-1 LMC) swept a Lake Michigan Conference baseball doubleheader at Marian College (6-6, 1-2 LMC) in Fond du Lac, Wis. on Monday. The Eagles won by scores of 9-2 and 6-3. The games were a make-up of Saturday’s postponed doubleheader.

Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) collected three hits, scored twice, and drove in two. Reynolds also stole three bases to increase his league-leading total to 13. Ryan Halliburton (Dewey, Ariz.) improved to 3-0 on the mound with his second complete-game victory of the season. Halliburton allowed nine hits in seven innings and one earned run. He struck out two and walked none.

Edgewood led 4-0 by scoring twice in the top of the first and twice in the top of the second inning before the Sabres countered with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles proceeded to plate five unanswered runs, but not until a three-run rally in the top of the sixth.

In game two, Marian scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Bryan Burgert pitched seven scoreless innings for the Sabres before Shawn Burcum’s (DeForest, Wis.) RBI single in the top of the eighth inning got Edgewood on the scoreboard, but still trailing 2-1.

Rob Gudates knocked a two-out single in the bottom half of the frame and then stole second base, which set up an insurance run for the Sabres as Will Griswold followed with an RBI base hit.

Trailing 3-1, the Eagles mounted a remarkable comeback with five runs in the top of the ninth. Andrew Handorf (DeForest, Wis.) singled to bring home Reynolds and get Edgewood to within one. Alex Berta (Normal, Ill.) scored the tying run on a single by Nick Wilz (Appleton, Wis.). Then, with the bases loaded, Ricky Martinez (Beach Park, Ill.) laced a bases-clearing double to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead.

Four runs, including the loss, were charged to Sabre relief pitcher Dan Wolter, who earned the save in yesterday’s win over the Eagles and entered Monday’s contest with a two-run lead in the top of the ninth. Drew Powers finished the game.

Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.) earned the save after retiring all three Marian batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth. Jeff Potts (Kirkland, Wash.) picked up the win. Potts hurled the first eight innings and he allowed just five hits and two earned runs.

Edgewood is scheduled for a single, nine-inning game at Concordia University this Thursday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
